Kennesaw Mountain Kolb Farm Loop

The park claims to be the most visited Civil War battlefield in the country, and as such, can be very crowded, especially on weekends. However, if you don't desire epic views or rushing waterfalls, the Kolb Farm Loop at Kennesaw Mountain may just be your ticket away from the crowds. Bring the dog or go for a jog and find some solitude on this 5 mile loop.

Park maps can be found online (see notes below) or at the Visitor Center and have this loop starting at the Cheatham Hill Parking Lot. You can also begin at the Illinois Monument Parking Lot and use a few side trails to make a slightly longer loop. This parking lot is much less crowded and provides access to the Illinois Monument. If starting from the Cheatham Hill lot, take the path at the end of the parking lot down the road to the crosswalk, but turn right to the info sign and the start of the blue-blazed loop.

All the direction and mileage marker posts are positioned from begining at the Cheatham Hill lot. While there are several side trails, most are easy to ignore for the wider, well maintained main trail. Only a couple places a side trail might be confused for the main trail. Again, bring a map. The hike is overall very flat with a few moderate ups and downs but nothing really challenging. The biggest challenge is not stepping in horse poo.

There used to be several large open fields along the trail that have grown up to the point I thought I had taken a wrong turn and missed them. You'll see newer tree growth where they used to be. Other than a few creeks, there's not much in the way of features along this trail. At the northern end, you can take one of several side trails to visit the Grave of the Unknown Soldier and the Illinois Monument which are not directly along this loop. From there you can continue along the Assault Trail to enjoy a couple open fields and finish the loop at the opposite end of the parking lot.

Updated Review: Nice But Best for Locals
There's nothing wrong with this hike, but it's just not worth too much of a drive. Great for locals tho. The large open fields are overgrown and gone now. The official blue-blazed loop skips the Illinois Monument and the Assualt Trail which provides some sunny open field hiking. I suggest adding these to your route.

Easy Loop
Relatively easy loop. Plenty for history buffs to enjoy. Look out for horse poop.
