Graveyard Fields

One of the more popular destinations in area, Graveyard Fields offers two waterfalls on an easy loop or a short partially paved trail to a single impressive waterfall. A great family hike that’s immediately off the Blue Ridge Parkway and one all skill levels can enjoy.

For its popularity, the parking lot near mile marker 419 is on the small side. You can begin this loop by either heading toward the upper or lower falls. For those that just want to go to the more scenic Lower Falls, take the trail on the north side of the parking lot, following the paved path. Cross the river and follow the signs for the falls. For this description, however, take the steps on the south side of the parking lot, hiking to the Upper Falls first.

The trail navigates through a tunnel of rhododendron and other foliage, before crossing the Yellowstone Prong and coming to the intersection with the Lower Falls Trail. Continue left to hike to the Upper Falls. This section of trail is more difficult than the rest, gaining elevation while navigating rocky terrain and wet, muddy trails. After rain, the trail literally becomes a small stream. There are many side trails, but navigation isn’t too difficult; just stay on the wider path. Many of these side trails reconnect shortly. The trail ends abruptly at a series of small cascades and rock slides. Climb up the rocks for a view of the Upper Falls.

Backtrack to the junction with the Lower Falls Trail. Keep right at the junction with the Graveyard Ridge Connector trail, then immediately afterward, keep to the left. A right at this unmarked split will take you down to the creek. This section of trail is largely exposed and even though mountains rise much higher in all directions, you are still over a mile high so expect some heavy winds. Walk along a long boardwalk before coming to the junction with the Trailhead connector.

Continue toward the Lower Falls, following the signs. Walk around to the base of the falls via the wood steps and platforms for an excellent view of this powerful waterfall. The Lower Falls is the highlight of this hike. When you’re ready to go back, follow the signs back to the parking lot from the previous junction. The short connector trail is paved to provide easier access for people who are just interested in seeing the Lower Falls.

Nice Hike Right Off the BRP
Great hike right off the Blue Ridge Parkway through a beautiful mountain valley, but can be crowded. The lower falls is quite nice.
