Walk this short loop within the Fort Mountain West Overlook trail system or explore further on less traveled trails for a longer, more difficult hike. Massive views, a restored stone fire tower, and a bit of history await you on this easy north Georgia hike. Bring the whole family and the doggo for this one.
As this is a trail system, there are many interconnecting trails to explore. From the trailhead, most people make a short loop following the West Overlook Trail and heading back along the CCC Stone Tower Trail. This gets you all the major attractions and is what the rangers suggested.
The West Overlook Trail follows yellow blazes and heads uphill before splitting with a short red-blazed trail to the left. Take this to head straight to the West Overlook viewing deck that offers year-around views. Once you've finished taking in the views, turn around back up the steps and head straight through the intersection toward the Stone Tower that you should see looming directly in front of you.
Follow the red-blazed CCC Stone Tower Trail back down to the parking lot, passing the remnants of the stone wall built near the mountain's summit. Continue straight through an unmarked vehicle path and the blue-blazed Stone Wall trail.
If you're looking for a bit more difficulty, more distance, and a little bit wilder trail, make a larger loop with the North Stone Tower trail, also blazed yellow. If you really want more, check out the 8-mile Gahuti Backcountry Trail.
