Explore around Hooper Bald, an easy to access grassy bald along the Cherohala Skyway in the Nantahala National Forest. With several visitor information signs, views from the parking lot, and an easy trail to the bald, this makes a great option for a pit stop if travelling through the area.
Restrooms are available at the 10 car parking lot, but were closed when I was there with a sign to other trailheads with restrooms. The trail begins to the right of the visitors information boards. Begining paved, the trail immediately changes to gravel. Following along the hillside, pass a confusing sign for a trail intersection that isn't there, then continue across a gravel road and campsite on the left.
At .4 miles the trail leaves the woods and enters the grassy Hoopers Bald. To get to the highest point of the bald and the view, turn right. Turning left you can make a short loop around the top, but there are no additional views along here. Soon after entering the bald, on the right will be a small rock overlook through the trees that offers a nice view.
You kinda have to explore around to find the best view as the "trail" gets lost in the taller grass. There's not an expansive 360° view like the neighboring Huckleberry Knob just down the road, but there are decent views to be had for such a short easy trail. Also, be on the lookout for wild hog!
