Powell Mountain may not be the most exciting section of the Appalachian Trail in Georgia, but it does offer a great view and maybe best of all, solitude. Hike southbound along the AT to catch long distance views of Lake Burton and the mountains to the east.
Park at Dick's Creek Gap and begin this hike by crossing US-76 to head south on the AT. Look for the white-blazed post immediately across from the parking lot. A couple smaller offshoots from the trail leave to the right but stay on the main path to the left.
The trail wastes no time beginning it's ascent. Climbing at rates between 700 and 900 feet/mile, this is a moderately challenging hike. The trail is kind enough to offer several breaks in the incline to catch your breath. Hike past a blue-blazed trail to the left, then another side trail to a campsite on the right.
As you approach the summit the trees thin out making way for lower ground vegetation giving you slight views through the trees. Hopefully you'll catch a good breeze on the way up.
Technically Powell Mountain is before the final dip through McClure Gap at 2.2 miles. At 2.5 miles, take the blue-blazed side trail marked with a sign for "Vista". Walk through a campsite then down to a small rocky clearing. Here you'll find long distance views to the east including Lake Burton, Black Rock Mountain, and Rabun Bald.
