Explore the Towaliga River and High Falls along the Falls Trail double loop at High Falls State Park. This easy trail is good for all hikers and is easily accessed not far off I-75 in central Georgia halfway between Atlanta and Macon.
Park across High Falls Road in the large lot where there are restrooms, pavilions, and playgrounds. Cross the road to begin this hike. A marker indicates the Falls Trail double loop begins to the left but going to the right takes you right to the falls which is what I imagine most people do.
Head down steps and wooden railing as you descend to several views of the falls and several smaller cascades and rapids. The official red blazed trail stays a little above the river but numerous intersecting paths keep you close to the water with better views.
Back up on the trail, the path shortly comes to the union of the two loops. This can be a bit confusing with red blazed trails seemingly going in multiple directions. When you come to the two small footbridges, you can stay straight to start the second loop or turn left. Continuing to the left will take you back to the trailhead but crossing the second bridge will take you along the other direction of the second loop, with several small trails connecting back toward the river side of this loop. Either way, it's not hard, just stick with a red blaze.
There are numerous longer side trails that take you closer to the river, but the few I explored didn't go anywhere worthwhile so on the second loop stick to the main trail. After another view of some small cascades the trail loops back to the two loop connection point. Continue on the second half of the first loop to complete this hike.
