The newest trails in the park, take a break from the crowds heading up to Kennesaw Mountain and relax on the Environmental Loop and 24 Gun Trails. While these trails lack views, they do have plenty of information signs along the way. Learning is fun!
You can begin this hike at the main Visitor Center parking lot or from Gilbert Road. Good luck getting a parking spot at the Visitor Center on the weekend. Even though there are over 80 parking spaces, you'll most likely have to park at the overflow lot just past the park on Old 41 Hwy NW. There are signs from the main lot. This will add about .8 miles round trip on to your hike. Begin these trails across the parking lot from the Visitor Center. Walk through the picnic area to access the trailhead at the sign. Alternatively, parking along Gilbert Road is sparse, but few people begin from here. At the time of writing, the road was extremely rough with large potholes so go slow.
If starting from the Visitor Center, follow the sign to head around the Environmental Loop clockwise. After a third of a mile the 24 Gun Trail connects to the right. Take it, crossing a road before ending at the Union 24 Gun Battery. A field on the right provides some side trails if you want to explore around a bit. Otherwise, head back to the loop, following it around to the start of the hike.
