Powers Island Trail System

Looking for a short, easy, local hike in north Atlanta for you and the doggo? Check out Powers Island trail system, a unit of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. If you looking for any kind of serious hiking, move along, this isn't for you.

The parking lot is quite large, thanks mostly to the Chattahoochee River Outpost of the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC). Here you can rent tubes, rafts, and kayaks or schedule a river trip with them.

There are three trailheads. The one near the Outpost crosses a bridge to Powers Island but quickly ends at the other side. A short loop does exist along the island but is not on the official maps and doesn't look like it's maintained.

The other two trailheads start at the opposite corners of the parking lot. Go either direction to form a loop around this short trail system. Maps are posted at intersections. There is one side trail on the north section at the higher elevation. Blue blazes are marked on both sides to signal the correct path.

Good for a Dog Walk
This is only really a good option for someone who lives nearby and wants to give their dog a walk but the dog is old and doesn't want to walk too much but also likes to get a little muddy and collect a few ticks on the way.
