The Iron Hill trail at Red Top Mountain State Park offers hikers and mountain bikers an opportunity to relax and enjoy the outdoors on an easy flat loop. A wide, well maintained mixed use trail navigates along the shores of Allatoona Lake offering several views of the water on this 4 mile hike. Great for kids and dogs and hammock people. So many people in hammocks.
Begin this hike at the Iron Hill parking lot one mile down from the Trading Post on Red Top Mountain Road. If you need to hit the restroom or want to get a map, stop by the Trading Post or Visitor Center first. The trail begins at the end of the large gravel parking lot and immediately splits right and left to form the loop. Go either direction but the info on this page is for turning left to head around clockwise.
The trail meanders from gravel to dirt to pinestaw, staying flat and level throughout. Picnic tables are scattered about and plenty of short side trails lead to views of the water. Two of these I recommend. They are larger and clearly more trodden with wider unobstructed views of the lake. See the orange markers on the map for more details. While there are plenty of minor lake views along the way, colder months will bring even more through the trees.
Navigation is easy with a couple of notes. There are several intersections with an offroad service road, but each of these has a map and arrow signs pointing the way. Two intersections are not well marked but just stay on the wider maintained path. If you head around counter-clockwise there is a 4-way intersection almost immediately (at the end if clockwise). Just go straight through here. One direction heads toward a campground and the other is a shortcut to the one other unmarked intersection.
